Cloudflare launches a beta Web Search API for AI agents via three providers.

Cloudflare's Web Search API, in beta, lets AI agents search the internet through Ceramic.ai, Exa, or Linkup. All providers support zero data retention and Cloudflare's verified bot standards. It runs through AI Gateway, appears in gateway logs, and bills at each provider's list price with no markup. Users can bring their own API key. Access is via REST API or Workers AI binding.

The API aims to ground AI responses in live information rather than relying on a model's training cutoff.

What commenters are saying

Many questioned why Cloudflare inserts itself as a middleman, citing ease of integration, unified billing, and failover as benefits. Some doubted the trust claim, but others noted convenience for organizations already on Cloudflare. Verified bot access was clarified: these search engines are listed as verified bots, though site operators control block rules. Absent providers like Brave Search API were noted. A separate thread debated Cloudflare's frequent HN front-page appearances, attributing it to release weeks and overlapping user bases.
