Folders is an esoteric programming language where directory structure encodes code.

Folders is a non-textual esoteric language (created 2015, updated 2026) by Daniel Temkin. Code is expressed purely through containment and alphabetical ordering of folders; folder names are ignored. Commands and expressions are encoded by the number of subfolders in specific child folders. The language includes if, while, declare, let, print, input commands and arithmetic/comparison expressions. The Folders FS stores temporary data in folder names. The author claims folders take zero disk space in Windows, offering "infinite storage capacity."

What commenters are saying

Commenters found the language delightfully absurd and pointless. Some compared it to other mind-bending esolangs like WORST and Malbolge. One commenter recalled encountering it in a CTF challenge. A lengthy thread debated whether folders truly take zero disk space, with explanations about NTFS MFT reserved space. Another user reported having an AI generate a Python script that compiles a .fol language into folder structures. A correction noted the implementation uses natural sort order, not strict alphabetical sorting.
