Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
A tool that maps 13,626 U.S. properties bordering public land using official boundaries.
Unfenced.land lists properties adjacent to public forest, game lands, and wilderness, checked against official boundary maps. Weekly, it processes 700,000 active listings from RentCast, parcel boundaries from GIS services and Realie, and public land from USGS PAD-US 4.1 (fee-owned, open-access, 50+ acres). Each property gets shared boundary length, connected public land size, elevation, road access, flood zone, and wildfire hazard. Static pages rebuilt weekly on Cloudflare Pages. What commenters are saying
The builder explains the technical process: weekly data from RentCast, parcel boundaries from state/county GIS and Realie, public land from USGS PAD-US, with corrections for lot size errors, condo parcels, and multipart polygons. One commenter questions NAR/MLS compliance, but the builder notes they license data legally. Another asks about county/city land inclusion. A discussion arises on whether bordering public land is desirable: some cite trespass and liability risks, while others value guaranteed privacy from future development. A commenter shares how a private development enveloped a state park entrance, effectively privatizing access.
