Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
A port of Quake to safe Rust that runs in the browser via WASM.
Quake-SRP is a port of id Software's 1996 Quake from C to safe Rust, rendered in the browser with software rendering and no GPU or external dependencies. The shareware episode is included. Players can add their own Quake files (pak1.pak, mission packs, music) by dropping them on the page. The port supports gamepads, custom controls, and slop options, with preset options to match id's original WinQuake engine or the port's defaults. Source code is on GitHub.
What commenters are saying
Commenters focused on the role of LLMs in the port, with some assuming it was entirely AI-generated. The developer's GitHub shows human assistance. The visual diff harness for pixel-perfect accuracy was noted as a useful technique. One comment highlighted that the fast inverse square root is from Quake 3, not Quake 1. The thread split between those impressed by the technical achievement and those skeptical of the Rust port's necessity over direct C-to-WASM compilation.
