OpenTIE reimplements Star Wars: TIE Fighter natively on modern systems, combining 1995 and 1998 releases.

OpenTIE is an open-source reimplementation of Star Wars: TIE Fighter for Windows, macOS, and Linux, requiring original game data from the 1995 Collector's CD-ROM or 1998 Windows release. It allows mixing 1995 menus, cutscenes, and iMUSE adaptive soundtrack with 1998 flight simulation and 3D assets. Features include classic or modern graphics (shadows, ambient occlusion, bloom, HDR output), flight simulation at up to 240 Hz, modern gamepad/joystick support, and SC-55 Sound Canvas emulation. A companion project, OpenXWA, reimplements Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance.

What commenters are saying

Commenters expressed strong nostalgia and excitement for the project, with many recalling playing TIE Fighter as teenagers in the 1990s. Several appreciated the ability to merge the two editions as a killer feature. Some questioned the benefit over emulation, citing the need for a modern GPU and the long-term portability of DOSBox, while others pointed to the documented graphical and performance improvements. A few noted the availability of the TIE Fighter Total Conversion mod for the X-Wing Alliance engine and GOG as a legal source for original assets.
