A DIY 3D printer achieves micron-scale precision using common materials.
The μRepRap project aims to bring open-source micron-scale fabrication to hobbyists. The PIKA V0.02 version achieves repeatable positioning of ~1μm in an 8mm³ volume, depositing UV resin droplets as small as 4μm using an electrochemically etched probe. It uses 400-step NEMA17 stepper motors, Arduino GRBL control, and UV-cured nail gel resin. The project builds on OpenFlexure microscope platforms and seeks to enable independent micro-scale manufacturing of MEMS-like devices.
What commenters are saying
Commenters are impressed by the precision achieved with off-the-shelf parts. Several note that the small build volume (8mm³) makes the accuracy more feasible. One commenter points out that encoders are cheap but actuator backlash and stiction are the real problems this setup solves. Others discuss the challenges of scaling down further, citing the square-cube law and different force regimes at small scales.
