QGIS enacts moratorium on AI contributions
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
QGIS adopts a strict policy banning all AI-assisted code contributions.
The QGIS project has merged QEP 428, formally changing its AI policy from a "human in the loop" requirement to a strict ban on all AI contributions. Maintainers cited overwhelming review burden from AI-generated pull requests, which they say damages community trust and project quality. The policy applies to code, issues, and comments. A separate proposal (QEP 429) would create an exception for trusted contributors.
What commenters are saying
Commenters broadly support the ban as a necessary defense against review overload and slop. A top commenter who previously submitted AI-assisted fixes now endorses the ban, admitting LLMs gave a false illusion of competence. A minority argues the policy is vague, unenforceable, and hypocritical, especially if maintainers retain AI access. Some predict forks or AI-driven clones, but others dismiss this as naive about the complexity and community value of QGIS.
