Python 3.15
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
Python 3.15.0 is released with UTF-8 default encoding, JIT improvements, and new built-in types.
Python 3.15.0 introduces major features including the `sentinel` and `frozendict` built-in types, UTF-8 default encoding, explicit lazy imports for faster startup, and unpacking in comprehensions. The experimental JIT compiler shows 7-8% speedup on x86-64 Linux and 11-12% on AArch64 macOS. The standard library adds a dedicated profiling package and the Tachyon high-frequency statistical sampling profiler. New typing features include TypedDict with typed extra items and TypeForm annotations. The Windows 64-bit binaries use the tail-calling interpreter, and macOS binaries now include free-threading support by default. A TUI adventure game, 'whatsnewt,' teaches new 3.15 features through puzzles.
A warning notes that tkinter/IDLE on macOS 27.0 may hang when opening dialogs due to a Tk graphics toolkit issue.
What commenters are saying
Several commenters reported broken links on the release page, with some PEP links scrolling to the wrong anchor. The XZ-compressed tarball is notably larger than the 3.14 release, due in part to two animated GIFs totaling over 10 MB demonstrating the Tachyon profiler; one commenter criticized this as "inadequate" and suggested SVG diagrams instead. Many commenters welcomed the JIT compiler improvements. A maintainer noted that the 3.15 release ends support for Python 3.10, allowing libraries to adopt 3.11 features. Some users pushed back on dropping support for older versions, while others argued that five-year-old versions should be dropped. The macOS system Python remains stuck at 3.9.6, which is EOL, though Apple only bundles it for legacy compatibility.
