Postgres 19 delayed as LLM code reviews discover more bugs than developers can fix.
The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has delayed version 19 from late September to around November 19, reverting 8-10 significant features. Committer Peter Eisentraut attributed the delays partly to LLM-assisted code reviews, which uncovered a long tail of edge-case bugs that would previously have gone unnoticed until after release. Features pulled included SQL Property Graph Queries (SQL/PGQ). The reverted features are now expected in version 20, which was previously slated to have no new features. Eisentraut stressed the reverts were not due to "vibe coding".
What commenters are saying
Commenters debated whether the increased bug count reflects actual new flaws or simply better detection. Several noted that LLM review catches subtle edge cases that humans miss, raising the quality bar late in the cycle. Some shared experiences with AI coding agents entering fix loops that introduced new complexity, though newer models like Opus 5.5 and gpt-6.1-sol were cited as less prone to this. One commenter found LLMs often suggest fixes requiring deep design tradeoff analysis-beyond simple patch generation.
