OpenTTD 16.0-beta1 adds backwards-driving trains, improved map generation, and a title game competition.

The first beta of OpenTTD 16 introduces trains that can drive backwards, multiplayer companies with open joining, and map generation enhancements including rocks on desert tiles, better coasts, improved lighthouse spawning, transmitters after 1920, and custom land height. Subsidies now work with CargoDist. NewGRF collections allow saved sets. Cargo payment aging can be scaled for large maps. Dropdown lists have text filters. Vehicle preview offers are combined into one window. A title game competition is open for community design.

What commenters are saying

The top comment hopes a crash bug is fixed. Another wonders if Yogscast Jingle Jam will use v16. A lengthy thread discusses the difficulty of setting up mods: one commenter wishes for curated NewGRF packs, while others recommend tutorials and note that v16's collections feature may help. Several comments debate train signaling, with path signals recommended for most uses. One user praises OpenTTD's 20+ year longevity as a key reason for its frequent front-page visibility. A comparison to Simutrans' more complex economy is offered.
