OpenShot 4.0 adds color grading, screen recording, and local AI object masking.

OpenShot 4.0 introduces a dedicated Color View with color wheels, curves, LUTs, and live video scopes (Luma Waveform, Histogram, RGB Parade, Vectorscope). A new Recording View captures microphone, screen, webcam, and system audio as separate editable clips. Ten new effects include Audio Visualization, Beat Sync, Film Grain, Denoise, Shadow, Glow, Displacement Map, Timer, Color Grade, and Object Mask. Object Mask uses locally-run ONNX machine learning models (YOLO, EfficientSAM, Cutie) for subject isolation without cloud processing. The timeline is now fully native Qt, with smoother zooming and editable timecode.

What commenters are saying

Commenters compared OpenShot to DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro, noting OpenShot is simpler but less feature-rich. Some asked about specific color grading controls (e.g., hue vs hue curves) and VST support. The cookie banner listing 209 adtech partners on the open-source .org domain drew criticism. Others praised the local AI masking and ONNX model approach. A few noted performance concerns and crashes on M1 Macs, while recommending Kdenlive as a more stable FOSS alternative for heavier editing.
