OpenCode 2.0 adds a background server, new API, code mode, background tasks, and plugin system.

OpenCode 2.0 overhauls the client/server model: the server now runs automatically as a single background process, and all interfaces (TUI, web, desktop) connect to it. The API was rewritten from scratch to support nearly any use case. A new `@opencode/codemode` package includes a minimal JavaScript interpreter that lets agents call MCP servers via scripts in a single round trip. Background tasks include sub-agents and async shell commands. The plugin system was reworked with 80+ internal plugins, and hot-reloading allows mid-session plugin creation. The `@opencode/sdk` package exposes the CLI code as a library for custom flavors. Breaking changes include incompatible 1.0 plugins, a completely different server API, and a moved config file.

What commenters are saying

Many commenters praise the improvements, especially background tasks and sub-agents. However, several users report security regressions: background process bypasses sandboxes, hot-reloading lets agents change plugins immediately, and plugin tools ignore permission config. The heavy website drew complaints for poor performance and confusing layout. Some users switched to alternatives like Pi or Charm Hyper, citing better support and performance. A thread clarifies OpenCode was not renamed to Crush; the projects are separate.
