An OpenAI engineer was arrested for planting an audio recorder in an executive conference room.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national and OpenAI engineer since July 2025, was arrested and charged with using a device to intercept oral communications. An audio recorder was found concealed in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port on a TV in an executive conference room. A second recording device was found in his unattended bag.

What commenters are saying

Many commenters criticized OpenAI for including a marketing line about using its models to identify the device, calling it tone-deaf and unprofessional during an espionage accusation. Some discussed the technical details of the espionage device, suggesting it was a simple ESP32-based recorder. Others debated whether the incident could be a false flag or highlighted supply chain risks for AI companies.
