IEEE Spectrum reports that Waymo robotaxis, per an independent study, showed 92% fewer fatal or serious-injury crashes versus human drivers in comparable city environments, including 92% fewer pedestrian injuries and 83% fewer crashes with airbag deployments. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found automated emergency braking (AEB) cut pedestrian crashes by 27% and rear-end crashes by 50%. AEB is mandated for all U.S. light vehicles by 2029. The IIHS's own July study found Waymo taxis had 68% fewer crashes overall than human drivers in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. However, incomplete crash reporting (up to half of human crashes unreported) may skew comparisons.
