GIMP 3.3.2 development preview introduces new project file format, non-destructive editing, and PSD improvements.

The upcoming GIMP 3.3.2 development release includes a new project file format using zipped XML to replace the legacy XCF format, enabling faster saves and auto-saving. Non-destructive filters can now be applied to layer masks, and the Gradient Tool supports non-destructive editing. MyPaint brushes gain spectral blending for realistic color mixing. PSD support is improved with editable text layers, descriptor import, and better layer style compatibility. Native file chooser dialogs replace GTK dialogs on Windows, macOS, and KDE. UI updates include vector cursors, redesigned search actions, and better pattern dock display. Over 78 cursor icons were converted to SVG. The stable GIMP 3.2.6 release is planned soon with bug fixes only.

What commenters are saying

Commenters largely welcomed non-destructive editing and PSD improvements as long-awaited features, noting their value for experimentation. A few questioned the choice of zipped XML over formats like SQLite or OpenRaster, but others defended it citing successful use in Office documents. One thread debated the pronunciation of "XCF" to explain the article's use of "a XCF file." A comment referenced the failed Glimpse fork, noting its repo has been dormant for 7 years.
