FFmpeg 9.0 "Lei" released with animated WebP support and ONNX Runtime backend.
FFmpeg 9.0 "Lei" arrives about 4 months after FFmpeg 8.1. The release includes an animated WebP decoder and demuxer, an ONNX Runtime DNN backend with GPU execution provider support, AMF Frame Rate Converter and Color Converter HDR improvements, HE-AAC 960 decoding (DAB+), ProRes RAW VideoToolbox hwaccel, and removal of deprecated NVENC options. The full changelog is available at the project root. The project thanks Claude for Open Source program for helping find missing backports.
What commenters are saying
Commenters welcome the release, especially animated WebP support, which browsers have supported for years but FFmpeg lacked. Some note the ONNX Runtime backend and the use of Claude to find missing backports. A few express confusion about the version number, since FFmpeg 8.0 was released in 2025 and 8.1 in early 2026. One commenter shares a detailed blogpost about the release. The thread is broadly appreciative of FFmpeg's continued development.
