OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work, an agentic feature for multi-step tasks across apps, files, and desktop.

ChatGPT Work, powered by new GPT-5.6, acts as an agent that gathers info across connected apps (Slack, Teams, Google Drive, etc.) to create slides, docs, sheets, and web apps. It breaks complex projects into independent steps, works on scheduled tasks, and can operate on desktop via Computer Use. Rolling out first to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Codex is merging into the new ChatGPT desktop app.

What commenters are saying

Commenters largely see this as OpenAI catching up to Anthropic's Cowork feature, launched ~5 months ago. Many are confused by the UI/UX: toggling between Work and Codex modes appears identical, and the existing ChatGPT desktop app is being replaced by Codex, with the old ChatGPT renamed to ChatGPT Classic. Some lament losing a simple chat experience, while others note the underlying capabilities were already present in Codex.
