Early-life sugar exposure, even just in the first 1,000 days, is linked to lower cancer risk decades later.

A study using Britain's post-WWII sugar rationing (which ended in September 1953) examined over 64,000 people born between 1951 and 1956. Those exposed to rationing for a larger share of their first 1,000 days (conception to age 2) had lower incidence of breast, prostate, liver, rectal, and lung cancer in their 70s. Liver cancer risk was 69% lower; breast cancer 36% lower. The rationing group also showed longer telomeres (equivalent to 2.2 years slower biological aging) and lower granzyme B levels. Furthermore, those rationed early consumed less sugar and had healthier diets even at age 50, suggesting early taste preferences are long-lasting.
