In California's Scott River valley, beaver extirpation by 1830s trappers eliminated wetland habitat for threatened coho salmon. Starting in 2015, the Scott River Watershed Council built artificial dams from wood, willow, and mud on Sugar and French Creeks. The dams created 9,000 m² of new habitat, kept water cooler, and raised juvenile survival from 8% to 60%. Two years later, Scott River had the highest returning salmon numbers among monitored rivers, even during drought.
