iPadOS 27 breaks the ability to present one app while using another on iPad.

Teddy Svoronos reports that iPadOS 27 forces the external display to mirror the full iPad screen when tapping any window other than the presenting app during AirPlay. This reveals hidden notes, poll results, or causes presentation exits in GoodNotes, Keynote, and PowerPoint. Previously, swiping to the dock allowed switching presenters. The author proposes that presenter-mode apps should always keep external display precedence until stopped. Apple has not changed the behavior in beta. Svoronos filed feedback with Apple (code FB23615646) and recommends against updating for teaching or presenting.

What commenters are saying

Commenters split into two camps. One argues iPads are not real computers and regressions like this are inevitable due to lock-down, citing difficulties with file management, multi-audio, and windowing. The other counters that iPads succeed in specialized settings (trial presentation, rental-car workflows) and that desktop OSes also suffer regressions. A sub-thread notes Apple used to prioritize UX for niches like presentations but has lost that focus. Some point out that on macOS, the user can fix issues via package management or system modification, whereas iOS offers no such escape hatch. A few observe that Enterprise and law firms control OS versions tightly, avoiding the problem.
