Air Theremin – A browser theremin you play by waving at your webcam
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
A browser theremin played by waving hands at a webcam or tilting a phone gyroscope.
Air Theremin offers two modes: HANDS, which tracks both palms via webcam for pitch, volume, vibrato, and tone; and GYRO, which uses phone tilt. MediaPipe Hand Landmarker runs locally on the GPU; no video leaves the machine. A bass exciter generates harmonics below 150 Hz to compensate for poor phone speaker reproduction. The project is a single HTML file, MIT-licensed, by Pavel Gurov.
What commenters are saying
Commenters largely praised the project as fun and innovative, with several noting the camera tracking was responsive enough for creative use. A technical discussion arose around the hand tracking: the author detailed how MediaPipe loses hands on edge-on wrist turns or in low light, and how he tuned a hold timer to avoid dropouts without lag. Some commenters expressed privacy concerns about granting webcam access to a random site, while others debated whether the AI-generated comment style was off-putting.
