A font recreated from photographs of classic Commodore 64 keycaps
Points and comments are a snapshot, not live.
A font recreated from photos of Commodore 64 keycaps, with clean outlines and PETSCII support is now available.
Levente Szabadkai's C64 Keyboard font reconstructs the lettering from his Central European Commodore 64's keycaps, offering TTF, OTF, webfont, and editable outlines under CC0. It includes uppercase letters, numbers, punctuation, special characters (like π), accented letters (including Hungarian), and all 63 PETSCII graphic front legends with reconstructed outlines based on photos and references. The font is designed as an independent, unofficial recreation, not affiliated with Commodore. Download links and a browser preview are provided, with build instructions and version history on GitHub.
What commenters are saying
Commenters praised the font's clean, humanist design, with some noting its resemblance to existing typefaces like Akzidenz-Grotesk Condensed. Download issues were reported and solved by using raw links or removing query strings. Critics pointed out perceived proportional inaccuracies (e.g., misaligned punctuation, floating exclamation mark) and questioned the project's AI-generated nature, while others appreciated the attention to detail and retro aesthetic. Requests for similar fonts for other vintage systems like the ZX Spectrum and Apple II were also made.
